Navigating the VA can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Make it a team effort, veterans will need the support of their family and friends in this part of the transition process.
You probably have a lot of questions. Maybe you don’t understand all the details of compensation or pension payments, home loans, job training or the new G.I. Bill. Maybe you want to appeal a benefit rating. If you’re a wounded vet, or the family member of one, you probably want to know more about possible severance pay, monthly monetary benefits and eligibility to use VA hospitals and other medical facilities.
While the process of applying for benefits can take months, medical and psychological care is available immediately. There are experts who understand what veterans have been through. Every VA medical center has specially trained outreach workers who can help you find the care veterans need. Ask for them when you call.
Assistance with benefits applications is as close as the nearest state or county Veterans agency, VA regional office,VFW, DAV, or American Legion. Ask to speak with a service officer about your questions or claims. They’ll help ensure you get what you’ve earned. And they’ll do it for free.
You can also search our resource database for a Veterans Affairs office near you.
